Circular Self Portrait In Blue/ If You Love Someone Set Them On Fire

Circular Self Portrait In Blue by Birds Use Stars

If You Love Somone Set Them On Fire by Birds Use Stars

Two songs for the price one? Could it be true?

I took off on a vacation for a little while and hence got completely out of rhythm for what was until this point a "Song Per Week" kind of project. Unfortunatly running that in my spare time was becoming tough, and I'm currently a bit burned out by the whole thing. Additionally I'm starting a new project, which will eat into my time for this even more. Basically I'll be updating and making new songs, but in a more intermitant fashion.

And even THEN! I'm still in the process of switching my setup over to Mac! Exciting I know.

So all in all a bunch of things to take care of before I can kick back into B.U.S., so a bit of a break until I'm re-established. In the meantime, enjoy these two songs!

PM Thunder

PM Thunder by Birds Use Stars

A new song for this week. Blending synthy ideas with splashy stop start rhythm ideas, which I'm getting into more. Also a mid song tempo shift, which I think is a new element for this one.

Once again I am at a loss for things to blog of.

Catch

Ah, 20 tracks. Hours of music for the people.

I've been, as listeners may be able to tell, on a house music kick, I was considering making August kind of a "House Music Month" although we'll see where that's at next time I drum up the will to start up the next song. When it cools down a bit.

In other news I've re-arranged my little blog page so that the most recent song is in it's own little box, as well as being blogged down here. I'm not sure it's the best way to go, but I thought I'd try it.

Beyond that, more the same, I leave you with this:

Anxiety

Sometimes I get tired of breakbeats, although that is very rare. This song is, once again later than I hope to post them, this time because I was lazy.

I blame being drunk dialed by my friend Jonny at 8 in the morning, and then being chastised by same for being awake at such an hour. Apperently it was "Big Lebowski & White Russians" night, which I'm in support of. Regardless, here we are.

Here is this thing:

Submarine

The new song. It's called submarine. I think it's a bit more hectic than the last few, and it is certainly faster. Every time I make a song, I try to do something different from what I've done before, I'm not sure if I've entirely achieved that here really, but I'm happy with it regardless.

Also, as I've mentioned on the ol twitter, this is song number 19. I'm nearly at 20, which is ridiculous considering that I tend to make long ass songs. Basically I've got 2 and a half hours of music in just under 5 months. Considering that I have to do this in my spare time, I'd say that's fairly impressive. You could almost finish watching Fellowship of the Ring in that time frame.

Stars

Hello! This song is called Stars. Why? well because that's what Birds Use (apperently).

Since I don't have an interesting enough life to blog about (because I spend all my time hidden in a dark hole chiseling out music), mabye I should start making things up?

Or I could just talk about that time that I fought off the space scorpion invasion on the planet of the Xenonymphos. It's no big deal, it's just the kind of thing that you run into on occasion when you are a traveling intergalactic love-making consultant.

In fact, yeah, no one wants to hear that story, it would be boring.

Terciary

BOOM! Eat new music!

I've decided to go orchestral this week. If that is a good thing or not is something for other people to decide. Personally, I think that it's quite nice.

I've just been thinking lately about Trent Reznor talking about how to make it as a new artist these days. He says to give away pretty much everything that you make to get exposure or something, maybe sell people T-Shirts or something when you get popular enough that people want to buy things from you. Maybe so, but it's funny to me that in music, you need to be rich to make money. If you aren't rich, people won't take you seriously enough to want to pay money for what you do, because obviously if you are rich, you must be popular, which means that other people agree that it's a good idea to give you money.

It's complicated I guess. All I know is that I hate when Trent tries to explain things, because words have never been his strong suit.

Oh well, I suppose that I will continue doing what I am doing until someone sends me money to make me rich, then I can sell music to get rich. In the meantime, the same as always, one song down, time to work on the next. It's a compulsion. But before that, important business happens near the monkey island area...

Because...

Woo! A week without an update and now this?!? What gives?!?!

Well, I had run out of soundcloud updates for last month so when the turnover came around I figured I'd just wait and have a buffer song. So now I'm working on the next one while The People listen to the last one. In a way I am living in the future...TODAY.

I love making synthy tracks, clearly, and would be perfectly happy on a desert island with just a Moog and a cocounut to talk to. I think this track reflects that pretty well. Tons of chorusy Juno, and 303 thanks to D16 Phocyon and the Tal Juno Emulator which is totally free (as in beer) and you just don't have an excuse for not having it. If you don't get it, then I just can't help you.

In other news it is the 4th of July now, so happy that! Personally I live in an area of the country which features none other than the oldest 4th parade ever, which makes it the prime destination for drunk tourists from miles around to drive around in circles for the 3rd and 4th. it took me an hour to drive ten miles today to get home. During the parade, the national guard will direct traffic, as the stop lights panic under the pressure and just become blinking yellow lights.

So yeah, happy 4th...

(2:51:45 AM) Abe: no sir, i did read the blog however
(2:51:51 AM) Abe: nice to see my dot matrix comment made it in
(2:52:13 AM) Me: at this point it's fundimental to what I think of that song
(2:52:17 AM) Abe: and you had to muddy it up with a weird computer sex story
(2:52:31 AM) Me: that was important!
(2:52:59 AM) Me: and it's not real sex, it's musical sex, which is basically just dancing and singing
(2:53:11 AM) Abe: and paper flying in the air
(2:53:16 AM) Abe: and incompatibility
(2:53:18 AM) Me: well YEAH
(2:53:38 AM) Me: what do you think the printer is doing?
(2:53:46 AM) Me: jerking it while watching? GEEEZE

Optimist Prime

Through magic, I have recieved another upload for this month, and this I give you the new/old song that I finished last week. This time I played a synth while arrangeing this, so there is that. I think it sounds quite nice. Enjoy.

Unfortunates & Nocturns & The Making of Persephone

Well, first thing is first, no new music posts until next month. Not to say that I am terribly busy, only that my Soundcloud account is entirely out of uploads for this month. Apperantly I lost track or possibly I lost one in the newest build. So there is that (.__.)

On the other hand, this gives me a couple of new opportunities, not the least of which is to use this blog for some actually blogging for once, which is what I guess I'm doing here (such as it is).

Anyway, moving right into it I recently recieved a message from none other than the Audiobooth guy!

Hello bud,
Love this track - alot - and wondered if you ever blogged about 'the making of'?
I'd like to link to it on http://audiobooth.net if so. Really well structured and produced.
Cheers
Mark

Audiobooth is a wicked cool thing and it's super awesome to me that you like my music Mark. Now the idea that interests me even more from this is the "making of" idea, so I think I might actually give this a try. I generally shoot from the hip so much that running through it this way might give me a chance to reflect on the results. The idea that at least one guy would be interested in this sort of thing is motivation enough!

Re-posting this for her pleasure...

The first thing that you should know is that all of my songs are arranged, mixed, and mastered all at once in Live. Basically what you hear in any given song is 4 tracks representing what I call "Lead", the "Bass", "Drums" and finally "Vox" representing, respectively, the Highs, Lows, Low-mids, and High-Mids. All of these go into a couple instances some Modular Software(tm) running what are called "Smart Mixers". It gets pretty technical but basically they are sidechain multiband compressors. What happens is each tracks dominant frequency range pushes down on that range in the other tracks, so they all come in clearly. Moldover pretty much invented the idea, and he explains it better here

ANYWAY on to the track itself!

This song actually represents a load of indecisiveness. Short on ideas I started throwing together riffs and techniques on my various soft synths until I ended up with basically 3 distinct songs with similar foundations to each other. Rather than just pick one I arranged the finished parts into a medley and ran with it. First in a row, and then overlapping the loops into each other.

0:00-
The song starts with a loop I called "Morse" for obvious reasons. I find it's stunning what you can accomplish with free synths and effects sometimes. In this case 2 instances of the Tal Elec7ro synth both with the Tal Juno chorus effect for added sexy. I use that synth absolutely all the time, it can do just about anything! The Lead line is a bunch of midi clips being triggered at random by Live follow actions.

0:20
I've been told that it sounds like a dot matrix printer. I like to imagine a computer lab late at night, the equipment comes to life when no one is around and they perform this music as a musical love story between an old Atari, and an IBM. They were never meant to be. They are not compatable.

0:35
Bringing the D&B drums, which I love too much

0:52
I like to give all my songs some unity with each other, in this case a faint, filtered french horn blast from an earlier song. "Eat The Sun" I think...

1:15
Time to break it down a little bit. Some delay and a beatmashing plugin bring it hard. It's great to be able to trigger all those stutters and reverses by just hitting a drum pad. I used to have to cut them up by hand, which sounds nice, but it's also a pain in the ass.

1:42
Part 2 of our story fading in. The Rhodes line for the digital lovers first tender meeting. It sounds like more follow action, but actually isn't, though it IS constructed in a similar way. I made 5 midi clips with 5 different 2 chord notes on a (software) Rhodes and triggered them as I saw fit with the QWERT keys. Then just a little delay and we're done!

2:40
I love this bass line. It was a last minute addition before I arranged this. It is a testament to the FACT that rum makes better synth playing. FACT.

2:53
Don't every worry about drum fills that are clearly not from the same source. Just ask Portishead.

3:36
BREAKDOWN TIME! I love breakdowns because I can abuse my beatmasher. Don't do it too much, or you can grow hair on your palms. This is where the computers are making love by interfacing their serial ports. The lab is alive with lights and paper flying through the air.

4:25 or so
The introduction of our featured vocalist and the namesake of the song. It's some kind of Swedish doll girl or something counting to 4. It was broadcast from Number Station Persephone, the enthusiast name for one of the many mysterious shortwave broadcasts that are theorised to be transmitions to overseas spys. No government has ever admitted to even the existance of so called "Number Stations" so no one actually knows for sure.

5:20
The second Rhodes line begins. I made it for a different song that never went anyplace, so I poached it. The computers know that they will soon be moved to different wings of the building. Tragic really.

7:00
They are in seperate wings but see each other from across the courtyard, where they long for each other. Starcrossed.

That just about has it. Interesting experience anyway. Me and my friend Abe thought up an idea for a demoscene chiptune musical around that little subplot. Just imagine old computers being pushed around stage, playing 8 bit music and representing emotions with little BASIC hearts and angry faces.

For now then, good night. Let me know if there is anyone that would be interested me doing this kind of thing in the future. I need something else to do until my account refreshes!

We Will Become Silluettes (Birds Use The Postal Service Mix)

I have caught the remix fever this time around. late as hell do to being too busy and whatnot over the last few days, but I slaved over a hot computer once again and have delivered what you hear before you!

This time around I have abused The Postal Service for my nefarious purposes. Only the drums are not from the song I was mixing, isn't that wonderful? I destroy pretty things and mold them into abominations!

I don't know what to do with a blog, since I am highly boring, although that does not seperate me from other blogs does it? Perhaps more later.

Here is another video. Created by my cousin, I direct you to enjoy it.

Persephone

Here! enjoy some soul-less computer music that may or may not have been invented by a rudimentry artificial inteligance. Digital Noise filled with backwards messages, and subliminal assembly code containing instructions on how to rock.

Here is a video fucker!

A Bright & Fearless Sunrise

Ah to finish early for once. Here is a song that is more "Art". Or maybe it "isn't". That isn't for me to "say". Regardless it is here, slightly before it had to be, and that is wonderful.

Guest vocals provided by a text to speech robot who was lovely to work with. Very professional.

She Makes Me Dance

The new song, several days late of course. Predisposed over the weekend, away from my Apperatus.

Apperatus re-aquired, and the song is done. It is wonderful.

I don't understand

Birds Use Stars assaults house music! A big loud bass drum and much destruction, because I don't fuck around. And yes I am posting this early. It needs to go up before I listen to it 500 times and then decide that I hate it. Now we can ALL listen to it 500 times and decide we hate it together! The internet is a wonderful invention, now we can all be hateful bastards together instead of alone as god intended.

Also, if you are listening to me (And I know you are out there) by all means, make contact!

Voight Kampf Test

Blade Runner is basically the greatest movie ever made. In this episode it is integrated into the greater collective of the waveform you see above. This track is quite long and much much slower than those below it, as it was time for something different. This update is later than I usual shoot for because I'd rather be late than shitty. In addition, a notable sample I'd been meaning to use made its way in. It is from Tales From The Afternow which is totally worth it.

Eat The Sun

The way you know that you've been up for REALLY long is when Law & Order disappears and becomes ads for exersize equipment, and then THOSE disappear so Law & Order comes back.

Todays song features the brand new shiny Tal audio synth, some drums, some french horn, and a totally illegal unauthorised sample getting warped around. So basically more of the same.

Electricity

Another strange track, although not to the extent of the previous. Yeah, long, I arrange live, and got carried away with this one, which is easy to do when you have a large enough set of sounds to play with. If this becomes a habit I might just have to streamline the process a bit, or get some stock footage of factory farms and military test footage, like soldiers running at nuclear explosions or those centrefuge tapes, you know the ones. Bill myself as an art installation and only play at universities. They don't always pay well, but I hear they let you use the cafeteria for free.
